Structural Assessment Demonstration at SDB's The SqWhere Project (January 2018)
BuildQAS conducted a finished concrete structural assessment demonstration for Selangor Dredging Berhad's QAQC team at The SqWhere project — covering column, wall, beam, and slab inspection to Singapore BCA standards.
Selangor Dredging Berhad (SDB) has long demonstrated a commitment to quality construction, having previously implemented CONQUAS assessments and engaged BuildQAS for quality benchmarking across multiple developments. As part of their ongoing quality management programme, SDB requested a specialised demonstration focused on structural phase inspection — an area that demands particular expertise and precision.
Why structural assessment matters:
Structural quality is the foundation of every building. During the construction process, assessing finished concrete elements — columns, walls, beams, and slabs — against established tolerance standards is critical for identifying defects early, before they are concealed by architectural finishes. Issues missed at the structural stage can become expensive and difficult to remedy later.
The demonstration:
BuildQAS assessors, who previously served as inspection officers at Singapore's Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and carry direct CONQUAS structural assessment experience, conducted a hands-on demonstration for SDB's QAQC team at The SqWhere project site.
The demonstration covered four key areas of finished concrete assessment:
1. Sample selection — Systematic selection of representative columns, walls, beams, and slabs for inspection 2. Dimensional tolerance checks — Verification of column and wall dimensions against allowable tolerances 3. Alignment verification — Checking structural elements for vertical and horizontal alignment using plumb and dumpy level 4. Surface quality assessment — Evaluation of exposed (off-form) concrete surfaces for bulging, honeycombing, and surface damage
Each inspection technique was demonstrated in full, with SDB's QAQC team given the opportunity to practise the assessment methods under the guidance of BuildQAS assessors.
